Can technology awaken the world’s forgotten languages?
31 Dec 2018124 KB
There are currently around 7,000 languages in the world but many of these languages may come obsolete due to a lack of being spoken. In Australia, linguistic experts believe that hundreds of indigenous languages risk being lost due to a lack of use. Language experts are hopeful that a small Artificial Intelligence robot named Opie can assist them in preserving these languages before it’s too late.
Advanced imaging techniques are also facilitating the revival of ancient languages by enabling machines to understand text that was previously undistinguishable to the human eye. It is clear that AI has the capability to re-awaken dormant, historical languages that haven’t been spoken for generations, but can new technologies really have enough of an impact to regenerate endangered languages?
