The library plays a key role in society and acts as a lifeline for many people, making social, academic, educational and cultural information accessible. As technology advances, and e-books rise in popularity, libraries are having to innovate in order to stay current and relevant.
For many countries, collaboration will play an intrinsic role in keeping libraries afloat. The sharing and integration of resources means that the strength of information can be maximised, making digital libraries invaluable to students, children and the wider community. However, issues are also emerging as the industry transitions. The relationship between privately owned, profit-driven publishing houses and publicly-owned libraries is not in complete harmony yet. The future for libraries certainly lies in embracing digital technology, but it is not yet clear how the next chapter will unfold.
