The recent surge in interest in ‘biomimetics’, the imitation of models, systems and elements of nature to solve complex human problems, is redefining our understanding of the world. The emergence of this form of technology and approach to engineering is causing us to revisit our relationship with our surroundings. Francis Bacon, 16th century father of the scientific method, foresaw our recent return to nature when he stated, “Nature, in order to be commanded, must be obeyed”. In a way, in implementing nature’s ways of operation, we are obeying it.
