Seeing how things sound – Assistive technology for the hard of hearing
CONTRIBUTORS
DESCRIPTION
466 million people in the world are deaf or hard of hearing and their needs are often overlooked. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies could provide an opportunity to address these needs and prevent future discrimination, allowing them to live full lives. One such way this is being achieved is by investigating ‘sensory substitution’ to augment people’s hearing, for example, using technology so the person is able to ‘visualise’ sounds. Whilst these technologies provide an opportunity to assist many, it is uncertain how they will be brought to the commercial market due to their current high cost levels.
