Data and automation are pervasive elements of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). Their use and prevalence have changed the way we live and work, and yet there is little cohesiveness in how data literacy is taught, maintained or utilised in the workplace. Consequently, faced with the challenge of planning for a future where automation via machines will augment our work and transform job roles - governments and business leaders alike have to consider what skills will be required by their workforce in the future.
Researchers considering applications of the 4IR believe that the key element to success in the new digital paradigm is ensuring all staff are data literate – that is, the ability of every employee to understand, analyse and interrogate data is what is important in recruiting one or two isolated experts.
