About Hannover

Hannover is the capital and largest city of the German state of Lower Saxony. Founded in medieval times on the east bank of the River Leine, the city is home to 535,000 inhabitants while the wider Hannover Region continues to grow and it is currently home to over 1.14 million people.

The city has become renowned for its trade fairs, including Hannover Messe. Partly thanks to its expansion to host EXPO 2000, the Hannover Fair is now the largest exhibition space in the world. Infrastructure projects undertaken in the run-up to EXPO 2000 played a key role in providing Hannover with highly efficient transport networks with first-rate national and international connections.

The Hannover Region boasts a balanced economic structure and a diverse spectrum of business sectors. Most jobs are in health and social services (69,900), in manufacturing industries (67,530) and in trade (65,180). Almost 51,000 businesses are registered in the Hannover Region, including around 44,000 mini businesses with less than nine employees, and over 237 major businesses with more than 250 employees.
